Merpati Plane Crash - 27 Died

A Merpati airlines Flight MZ8968 plane plunged to the sea yesterday as it approached the Utarom Airport, Kaimana, West Papua. All of its 21 passengers and 6 crews were predicted died in the accident.

Kompas quoted the Director General of Air Transportation Herry Bhakti as saying that the made-in China MA-60 turboprop plane was scheduled to land at 1.55 pm. At that time the weather was bad, rain was falling heavily and cloudy,  the plane was almost ready to land when suddenly communications broke off before the crash.

The fact that the plane was manufactured in 2010, therefore very young, has made people questioned the quality of the plane. Especially that former Vice President Jusuf Kalla has once rejected Merpati's plan to buy fifteen MA-60 because it was not certified by the U.S Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

Aviation observer Dudi Soedibyo said that the CN-235 passenger plane produced by Indonesia is much better than the Chinese MA-60. This can be seen from the fact that our CN-235 has been used by US Coast Guard, South Korean Air Force, French Air Force and Merpati airlines.

In a hearing with the House of Representatives in June 2009, the President Director of Merpati Bambang Bhakti revealed that the airlines has once grounded an MA-60 plane because they found a Crack in the Rudder of the plane.

Meanwhile the Director General of Air Transportation said that the plane has been certified in China and Indonesia, therefore there should not be any problem flying it here.

Considering that Merpati has purchased fifteen MA-60 planes, four flying - waiting for eleven more, I hope that the Indonesian government and aviation authority would investigate this accident thoroughly, . I also hope that the House of Representatives would hold hearing with Merpati and relevant parties on the real reason why has Merpati purchased the Chinese MA-60 plane, instead of our own CN-235 plane which is much better and safer.

Sad, very sad accident.

I trust the usual thorough investigation procedures which are mandatory after a plane has crashed will take place.

I don't know about the track record of incidents of this type of plane, but till the results of the investigation will be official, it would be wise to avoid flying with an MA-60..

Pak JK sudah melarang pembelian Pesawat Merpati tipe MA 60 dari China, karena belum mendapat sertifikasi dari federasi pesawat Internasional.. knp Indonesia beli pesawat yang risky spt itu? Thanks Harry! Berduka untuk Merpati MA 60 Plane Crash.

@Colson,
I agree with you that it's better to avoid using the MA60 plane before thorough investigation result is officially announced stating that the plane is safe.

@Meutia,
Yes this is a very sad news for us.

@Deeahzone,
Akibat dari kesalahan memilih pesawat maka 27 orang tewas.

Manufactured only in 2010?!?! Oh, what a catastrophe! Poor chinese, the "made in China" got emphasized... but poor victims and their families too..:-( May their souls rest in peace. My condolences to the families of the victims.

Not always the aircraft. Can be conditions, pilot error, or just plain bad luck. Condolences to the families concerned. We lost a helicopter a week ago with two onboard. Not sure what the causes were though.

@Webbieladies,
The safeness of transportation, especially planes, should be 100% guaranteed. If there is an accident with a 1 year old plane, then it should be investigated. Of course there might be possibility of human error and/or bad weather,therefore an overall investigation should be conducted.
I specifically mentioned about the origin because that's how it used to be reported by the news media.
Besides I also want to compare it with its competitor.

@Peter/Kiwi,
I agree that the cause could be human error, or bad weather, beside the plane itself.

China brand? no wonder, if talking about the quality from china, i always have skepticism on it, but if finally everything about the bribe/money....hii..speechless...

Hi Boyin,
I agree with what Jusuf Kalla that for air transportation we should stick to 3 principles :
1. Safety
2. Safety
3. Safety
We should never compromise that for cheap price.

Terrible news indeed. I heard the news during my big family gathering back in the hometown.. My heart goes to the family of the victims.

Agree that "safety first" should be the basis of all decisions. No life is worth saving a few penny.. or, as Indonesia slowly kills my faith in government officials, no life is worth 'saving' millions of dollars for the officials involved in this multi-million dollars deal.

Hi Asti,
I felt so sad when I saw on TV the burial of one of the stewardess.
Let us hope that the Police investigation will reveal what is the real cause of this accident.
