The Political Conflict at Puncak Jaya

19 people died and 1 wounded in a conflict between supporters of two rival candidates of a political party who wanted to participate in the regional election at Puncak Jaya, Papua Province on 30 and 31 July 2011.

Antara quoted the Spokesman of the National Police Inspector Anton Bachrul Alam as saying that the conflict was sparked by the change of support given by the Gerindra Party from Simon Alom to the party's regional chief Thomas Tabuni..

29 Policemen , including 18 special troop, were dispatched to the scene of conflict but failed to prevent the escalation of conflict because both sides were using bows and arrows, and throwing stones. One of the Police men was hit by an arrow.

The above conflict shows that the inability of a political party to control its own members has caused the death of many of its members and followers.

The question is : how can a political party rule a region if it cannot even control its own member ?

@Wisata Murah,
You are right my friend, political parties cannot rule.

Good question.

For quite some time now things seem to have turned pretty violent in the most Eastern part of Indonesia. Not a brilliant example of good governance I'm afraid.

@Umihoney,
One thing for sure is that the party leader is not eligible to be head of the region.

@Colson,
This violence would only increase local people's distrust on the government and politicians.

@Fahrizi,
Anda benar harusnya parpol antisipasi hal seperti ini.

Hi Harry, is the fighting because of the peoples need of independence or just political rivalry? I guess I dont really understand what is happening there, but if it is for independence, then perhaps this is no different to palestine and Israel or what happened in Sri Lanka, just it's happening here?

We still have political troubles everywhere. It's so tragic, of course.

@Luke,
According to reports the fighting that I mentioned on my post is about rivalry among candidates of one political party.
There are other fighting between the army and separatist movement.

@Mr Nyariadi,
Yes let's hope the situation and the politicians will improve soon.
I shall be very grateful if you follow my blog on Google Friend Connect. I'll follow back. Thanks

@Yaz,
It would be great if there is no more conflicts in this world.
But that's impossible, as long as people have wants and ambitions they will compete with each other.

@Utomo,
Yes it is tragic Pak Utomo.

partai politik harus mampu mengontrol perilaku anggotanya, perlu berani memberi sanksi

@R10,
Setuju, izin pendirian & pengawasan terhadap parpol harus diperketat.

KNPB activists claim that the violence was escalated when members of the TNI fired into the crowds killing 3.

Yes, there is a conflict between the military and independence movement, but they fight that war through the systematic repression and division of the population.

You can not draw a sharp line between the conflicts in Papua.

@Spaz,

In this post I wrote about the internal conflict among two candidates of a branch of national political party in the area that killed 21 people.

I don't know about KNPB, I just heard from you.

There are some people there who are not satisfied with the situation.
