Ba'asyir Jailed for 15 Years.

Yesterday, the Judges of the District Court of South Jakarta have sentenced radical Islamic cleric Abubakar Ba'asyir to 15 years in prison for planning, motivating and collecting funds for military training of radical people in Indonesia.

The said Court Verdict was passed based on Articles 7 and 14 of the Terrorism Law No.15 Year 2003.

The question is : Will this end terrorism in Indonesia ?

In my opinion, the prison sentence would have an impact on Ba'asyir's network, however it would not end terrorism.

Not only because terrorism has grown independently in Indonesia but also because it has many roots here i.e. Poverty, Injustice and Corruption.

As long as there are so many beggars/tramps on the street and so many poor people living in the slum area in many parts of Jakarta and other places in the country, as long as the courts punished big money robbers lighter than petty thieves, as long as education and health are still expensive, as long as bribery is a common practice, as long as politicians, government officials only think about themselves and their parties, there would always be people who would protest  violently/barbarically or even take the laws into their own hands.

Now of course I agree with you on the sources of terrorism. (Perceived)socio-cultural inadequacy and/or (perceived) socio-economical injustice, usually is at the roots of the phenomenon.

But I don't think these conditions in itself are enough to turn common civilians into terrorists.

For that an appealing radical philosophy or rather a radical ideology, plus a charismatic preacher, is necessary. Like was the case with perversions of anarchism, socialism or anti-socialism, liberalism, Nazism and unfortunately also perverted interpretations of religions.

The likes of Abu Bakar Ba'ashir provide just that: perverted religion calling for extermination of "filth" (= enemies = people who don't share their values, habits and convictions).

No, his imprisonment will not stop terrorism. Yet I think I should congratulate Indonesia on this sentence. It proves the system doesn't surrender to evil pied pipers.

@Luke,
Thank you, Luke.

@Wisata Murah,
Selama akar2nya masih terpelihara dengan baik, sulit sekali membasmi teroris.

@Meutia,
Negara kita negara hukum nasional yang berlaku bagi seluruh warga negara dari berbagai suku, agama dll. Oleh sebab itu hukum yang berlaku adalah hukum nasional.

@Colson,
I agree that the sources of terrorism are not enough to make people commit acts terror.
The situation should be going on for decades and led by an influential charismatic leader.

Government must take care about their civilians that was the root of evil and terorism

I saw Abu Bakar Ba'asyir on TV.
He was still smiling when the sentence was meted out. His spirits
remain upbeat and his outlook unfazed. The ol' guy even managed to launch into long talk with journalists. Man...he was one real eloquent guy.

It got me thinking for a while...
At his old age (73) most people would have been contented being "datuk nenek" to their grandkids, enjoying their life in contentment & peace...waiting for their time to die .

Who in the right mind wants to look for trouble with the law, get hauled up in court, associate with terrorist etc etc, which comes with all the stress, prison sentence and bad publicity.
What do they get at the end of the
day ? Terrorism doesn't "PAY" (money)
{pun intended )

Then it occured to me that maybe ...just maybe Abu Bakar truly BELIEVED in what he was doing. You know, aside from attaining benefits of political power,the ol' cleric truly BELIEVED that he was doing it in the name of God & reward awaits him in heaven. He was willing to risk life and limb for such a "worthy cause"

Why is Abu Bakar's mind so twisted ? Indoctrination.
Once a dangerous thought is implanted in a child, the damage is quite irreversible.
Anytime Abu Bakar dies, there will be plenty of mini Abu Bakars around
to continue his legacy.

That's why he's going away with a smile.....

@Smp3Lembang,
Yes they must control their officials

@Bear Wife,

I think Ba'asyir believe that he was doing in the name of God & reward awaits him in heaven. He was willing to risk life and limb for such a "worthy cause"

Some people believe that Ba'asyir is a tool used by politicians for their interests.
Especially now that the ruling party is facing the most dreadful crisis caused by bribery and corruptions allegations against its members.
The sentence and other weird things that's been going on would divert public attention from that party.

@DenBaGas,
The bad situation: corruption, injustice, poverty, has made him like that.

I don't think his statement "saya haram menerima vonis ini" has to do with "haram" or not, he just scared to die in prison...

As long as the causes for poverty exist, crime and terrorism will continue.
