Ruhut Sued for Calling People Communist

Prior to the commemoration of the national Heroes Day on 10 November 2010, some people have proposed that the government grant a National Hero Award to the late former President Soeharto.

Many people protested against this proposal saying that Soeharto did not deserve the award because of the abuse of power when he was in power from 1966 to 1998 that caused very big difficulties to the country.

In reaction to that protest Ruhut Sitompul, lawyer and member of the House of Representatives from the Democrat Party, alleged that people who do not agree with the said proposal are children of the former members of the Indonesian Communist Party.

Due this allegation, Ruhut was sued by four persons who do not agree with the proposal i.e. Judilherry  Justam, Chris Siner Key Timu, Muhammad Chonzin Amirulla and Stefanus Asat Gusma, have submitted a lawsuit against Ruhut with the District Court of Central Jakarta last Tuesday.

The said Plaintiffs claimed that Ruhut has committed an Illegal Action against them when he made the above mentioned allegation.

The submission of  said lawsuit shows that the image of the Indonesian Communist Party is very ugly in Indonesia, therefore people would be very angry if they are called members of said party.

I am a bit confuse why these individuals are suing Congressman Ruhut Sitompul for the reason they do not agree with the proposal. After all it is still a proposal and your Congress may not even approve it. On the other side of the coin these individuals have their rights. I just wonder what would be the charges. :)

kenapa ya ada orang yang selalu ceplas-ceplos dan gampang melempar statement

I don't think that outside China, Cuba or North Korea mr Ruhut will find many people who will be happy if he calls them communist. But the Indonesian communist-phobia he himself is a victim of, is on the verge of ridiculous. Mr Ruhut apparently is behind the times. He missed some epoch-making events. For his information: the Soviet Union collapsed 20 years ago. And by the way the Suharto style anti-communist brainwashing has stopped in '98.

I'm afraid mr Ruhut would think I'm a communist too. Because I'm of the opinion that it would be a disgrace as well a bizarre if the democratic RI democracy would turn a dictator with blood of hundreds of thousands of compatriots ( communist- and non-communist political opponents) on his hands, into it's national hero.

Such a big fuss over a trifle
issue...these people. Who care's if anyone is communist or not nowadays?

The only thing to be afraid
is to be poor because the poor
has no voice...no rights....
no freedom...nothing.

If you are a communist and rich
like China, who is there to
look down on you ?If you are
a democratic and poor like Africa,
who cares to even talk about you?

Politicians only know how to
make petty issues out of nothing because that is the only thing
they are capable of.

IMHO, if people have been any wiser then they should not be bothered with whatever came out from Ruhut... Ooops, am I going to be sued for saying this?

An old favourite chestnut, not only in your country, but once in the US too. If somebody opposed something they must be a communist. One comment was probably on the mark - who really cares if people were communist. Isn't about what people are now?

@TUKANG CoLoNG,
Iya, Ruhut selalu ingin tampil kontroversial.

@cicitHASSANu,

@JP,
They submitted the lawsuit because they do not agree with Ruhut's allegation. As I mentioned in my post to be called a communist is a big humiliation here.
Whereas Soeharto is a dictator who ruled with iron fists, victimizing not just communists but also human rights, students, labor, etc. activists who are not in line with his policies. His families and friend were alleged to have got lots of financial profit during his 32 years of power.
So people rejected the proposal.

@Berpikir Positif,
Sebagai politisi dia pikir dengan ceplas ceplos mungkin orang akan memperhatikannya.

@Colson,
Yes I agree that in most part of the world people do not like to be called communists, although the ideology has lose its grip in most communists countries.
From his statement perhaps Ruhut might also think that I am a communist because I also think that Soeharto does not deserve the Hero award.
Unless there is an independent fact finding investigation that reports he is innocent from the allegations.

@Attayaya_mantra,
Terima kasih atas follownya.

@Cucuharis,
Iya Ruhut membuat kita menggeleng gelengkan kepala.

@Bear Wife,
You have a point.
Who cares about communism today?
A rich and economically liberal communist country like China is well respected. And if other countries are not serious in developing their country properly I would not be surprised if communist Vietnam will pass them one day.

@Ria/The Dream Catcher,
Yes people should be more wiser in reacting to controversial statements made by politicians.

@Auraman,
Senang berkenalan dengan anda, terima kasih.

@Manajemen Emosi,
Tidak pakai translation, asli dong. Terima kasih atas komentar anda.

@Peter/Kiwi,
Yeah, who cares about communist today? The most important thing is good governance based on rule of law and transparency.
