Rising Price of Chili Pepper

Chili Pepper is the basic ingredient for making the Sambal i.e a specific hot sauce consumed by most people in Indonesia.

Many people, including me and people I know, felt that eating would not be complete without Sambal.

For that reason, people are very shocked when the price of Chili Pepper jumped very high from Rp 20.000 several month ago to Rp 100.000 per Kilogram today.

 It is very difficult to understand why Indonesia as an agricultural country could suffer sudden shortage in the supply of Chili Pepper that has caused the price increase.

Hello Mas Munir,
Yes, restaurants must increase their price, so in the end it is the consumers who must pay more.

@Coretan Rizal,
If waht you want to say is multi dementional problem our country is facing today, I agree with you.
Unfortunately the people should pay all that.

@Ria/The Dream Catcher,
It is really very sad that as an agricultural country we cannot be self sufficient in rice and chili pepper.

We got plenty of this variety in the Philippines, Harry. We could even grow this plan on flower pots. :)

Hi JP,
Actually we also have whole lots
of variety of chili peppers here,
I also plant it in a flower pot.
The problem there seemed to be problems for mass production. Perhaps due to weather changes, expensive fertilizers, decreasing plantations, distribution, etc.

saya beberapa hari yg lalu diwawancarai Trans 7 tentang harga ccabe ini
Saya jawab, untuk pedagang memang makin pedas :D

Unknown said...

semakin pedas memang,urusan cabe saja tidak mampu mengatasi.hehehe

@Cucuharis,
Pedagang terpaksa menaikkan harga akibatnya yang harus menanggung adalah rakyat konsumen.

@Wisata Murah,
Mungkin pemerintah/DPR terlalu sibuk mempersiapkan pemilu 2014 dan melupakan tugas utama mereka yaitu menciptakan kesejahteraan mayoritas rakyat.

TUKANG CoLoNG,
Mau kita begitu tapi sulit untuk saat ini.

however, small farmers who didn't have their own farm still get nothing from this rocketing chili pepper price, since the price of fertilizer, pesticides and farm rent price are also raise. This is a real condition as experienced by many people in my village Karedok Leunca

Javanese people say "Kapok lombok" that means you still eat Chili Pepper although it is very hot !

Multibrand...
First it was to substitute rice
with other source of carbohydrate..Now maybe they
want to substitute the expensive chilli/sambal with tomato.....

Sigh..either way the people can
never win....

Not only in ur country, but in mine as well.. The politicians up there will never feel the pinch cos their pockets are deep with corrupted money,
while the masses are expected
to "adjust" their lifestyle.
"Ubah cara hidup"...KONONNYA !

Soon we will all be eating grass
like lembu..!

duh, apa mesti ndak perlu pakai sambal kalau harga cabe selangit begitu. hidup di negeri agraris, tapi ndak bisa beli cabe, ceritanya gimana gitu? pemerintah mestinya ambil peran utk mengendalikannya dong. jangan bikin rakyat susah terus!

Food prices hit poor people first and foremost. That's sad.

Since Indonesia has a pretty open economy, maybe an increase of 25% has been caused by demand on the world market? Or have some subsidies been abolished?

@Karedok Leunca,
You are right, the farmer would not get benefit from the sharp price increase. That's ironic.

@Pak Utomo,
"Kapok Lombok" I like those words and its meaning.

@Bear Wife,
Politicians are the same everywhere
they made decisions and the people suffer. Bu I hope that we will never be like 'lembu'.

@Sawali,
Memang penyebab berkurangnya cabe bukan hanya perubahan cuaca seperti kata menteri pertanian tapi akibat kebijaksanaan pemerintah tentang pupuk, anti hama, irigasi, transportasi dll.

@Colson,
The price of chili pepper rose from Rp 20.000 to Rp 100.000 (5 times) in several months, and the govt blamed the weather for it.
It must also been caused by cut in subsidy of fertilizer, pesticides etc.

around my office and my home, all of price of the food using sambal increse by 1000 such as ikan sambal, terong sambal. huaaaaa

Unknown said...

Hi Meutia,
Big and small restaurants/canteens would surely increase their selling prices. So in the end it would be the consumers who would have to pay for the extra price.

triesti said...

I suspect there are 'players' keeping their stocks to increase the price. They can still sell the wilted one for those making dried chilli.

Hi Triesti,
I agree that may be a possibility.
