The New Attorney General: Basrief Arief

President Susilo Bambang Yudoyono (SBY) announced on Thursday evening the appointment of Basrief Arief as the new Attorney General.

Basrief, former Vice Attorney General 2005-2007, will replace former Attorney General Hendarman Supanji and take over the day-to-day job from Acting Attorney General Darmono.

President SBY will induct Basrief as Attorney General tomorrow.

Although Basrief Arief has retired three years ago, I hope that he would be able to improve the performance of the Attorney General Office among others prosecution of corruption cases.

I know we must not give up any hope in rooting out corruption. We have been living on hopes through a few attorneys general and eventually disappointments came out. Now it is time for another attorney general to take office. I'm still hoping and hoping and hoping til I realise that I won't be more disappointed than I was before if this attorney general is eventually no better than his predecessors...

However we all still have hope... at least... that's what matters most (as always) ;)

By the way: in the picture he doesn't look all that happy with the challenges in front of him :).

@Yari,
Now that the Prez has inducted him we can only hope that he will use his experience as Vice AG and Deputy AG Intelligent to conduct his job according to people's wish.

@Dee,
Yes, this is a tough job indeed.

@Colson,
Like you said we should now wait and see how the new AG perform in the first one year.
About his not smiling face on the photo, I think it shows that he is very serious.

@Aulawi,
Thank you.

@Saung Web,
I agree that at first the new AG might be pessimistic at what he face like corruption everywhere. But considering that before he resigned three years ago he was Vice AG from 2005-2007, and before that Deputy AG for Intelligent, let us hope that he will be optimistic.

once, he had refused to important positions because of age. I am a little unsure of his position now. I hope his three years retirement does not make it blunt to solve the big cases

Reborn,
I share your concern, but Prez SBY must have very good considerations when he made his decision. Let's give the new AG a chance to work.

@ Harry...

Generally, it is only fair to give people a chance to prove themselves in a new position before writing them off.

However, there are some pretty significant skeletons in the closet here (allegedly) so I would be guessing that any honeymoon Basrief gets will be short.

Hi Rob,
Many people think of him like you do.
But I'd rather wait and see how he will perform and evaluate after at least one year.
