National Heroes Day 2010

Today, Indonesia commemorates the bloody fighting in Surabaya, East Java, on 10 November 1945, between local patriots and the British military forces who came to help the Dutch re-conquer the country.

Actually the fighting also took place in other parts of Indonesia a.o in Bandung, West Java,  but the one in Surabaya was the fiercest one that killed so many people.

I hope that today's commemoration would remind Indonesians that the country exists because there were patriotic men and women who sacrificed their blood, sweat and tears to defend the country's independence.

To me, independence is viewed in another perspective. I don't mind if I still live in a Dutch colony today as long as everyone is given the opportunity equally to reach the top. So there is no handicap based on race, religion, etc. in the race to a position, everyone has equal access to anything and is treated and served equally. And the top leaders must be elected through a fair process of democracy, that's what matters to me concerning independence. You can call me nuts Harry, it is not the first time that I was called such. LOL.

However, I'm still really proud of our heroes and I really appreciated what they had fought for our country regardless of my 'unusual' view on independence. ;)

@Yari,
A very interesting thought.
Everyone has a right to think, say and do what ever they think is best for themselves.
As long as they don't bother other people there is no problem.
So I think that you are okay, not mad, Yari.

@Berpikir Positif,
I fully agree with you.

@Reborn,
I also hope so, absolutely.
We need such people.

It's a good thing to honour freedom fighters. Not only the political geniuses Soekarno, Hatta and the military one Nasution, but the hundreds of thousands who gave their blood, sweat and tears.

We don't have National Heroes Day here in Malaysia but I think we should have. I like the idea of remembering their struggle for independence and the fact that many good people sacrificed their life so that their children can have a better future.

@Adetruna,
I agree with you.

@Ismail/Passionate Blogger,
It's good to know that Malaysia also has a Hari Pahlawan.
In Indonesia we also call it Hari Pahlawan, and it is not a holiday either.

@Mawardi,
Yes we should not forget our heroes

I think nationalism is wearing thin amongst the youngsters. I doubt that they even know that there is a NATIONAL HEROES DAY... They would notice it however if is a holiday
