Please Protect Us

Yesterday, President SBY called on Indonesians not to rely on the Police and asked us to help fight extremism.

The Jakarta Globe quoted the President as saying that Indonesia is now facing a continuous and serious threat in terrorism and in horizontal violence.

Horizontal violence, a term often used in reference to student bullying, refers to abuse or aggression by individuals on their peers around them.

I hope that the President has instructed the intelligence networks, especially the State Intelligence Agency (BIN) to improve their performance in monitoring and detecting any kinds of activities that might pose a threat to our national security, such as the so called Indonesian Islamic State (NII) movement, those who spread Book Bombs, those who plan any kinds of violence, and other acts of crimes.

Moreover, I also hope that the President has instructed the Police to improve their performance in serving and protecting the society.

Thanks Harry Nizam!

I am hoping for the best for Indonesia and its people. It seems our country have lots of similarities. Anyhow, ours is not isolated case. These kinds of activities happen anywhere in the world.

Jolly Princess is right:"These kinds of activities happen anywhere in the world". Though I guess Canada is a much safer place than Pakistan.

Yet, I agree with you all governments should guarantee the external and internal security of it's citizens. Though to me it seems reasonable authorities call on the general public for help; to report, perhaps anonymously, suspicious activities to the police for instance.

terorisme dan kekerasan berkedok agama agaknya akan terus menjadi problem krusial di negeri ini, mas harry, selama sosok pemimpin kita tidak memiliki ketegasan sikap dalam memberikan solusi.

The thing is.. people says it's the people, not the religion. However, there are plenty religious leaders who plant seeds of hatred and no one did anything about that precisely because they are religious leaders. how can we expect the followers would be any better?

@Deeahzone,
Mudah-2an jaringan intelijen dan Polisi kita terus membongkar kegiatan mereka agar masyarakat tidak dihantui ketakutan lagi.

@Wisata Murah,
Yes, all kinds of crimes must be investigated, prosecuted in court.

@JP,
I agree that Indonesia and the Philippines have a lot in common.
Our politicians and scholars can learn from each countries' experiences.

@Colson,
I fully agree that the government may asked its citizens for help in handling this cases.
Before that the intelligence and law enforcement agencies must do their very best to handle them.

@Sawali,
Saya setuju dengan anda, sebagai warga negara kita hanya bisa berdoa, berharap dan membantu sebisa kita seprti melaporkan hal hal yang mencurigakan dll.

@Triesti,
The problem is because the law enforcement agencies and their officials tend to " kalah hawa " when dealing with people who claimed to be acting for certain religion. This is wrong because we are based on the rule of law i.e presumption of innocence, equality before the law, respect human rights.

Bullying is a worry in most societies - this can lead to other serious things when these kids grow up. Our politics is going very rightwing at present. Not a good sign for the elections later this year. I hate extremism of the right or left!

Hi Peter/Kiwi,
I also don't like radicalism, to the right or left, they are the same.
I use to say that I am "middle of the road".
