Religious Freedom is protected by the Constitution

The Indonesian (amended) Constitution of 1945 Articles 28 and 29 stipulated that every citizens has the right to choose its own religion and faith.

But unfortunately, recent incidents in Cikeusik, Temanggung and Pasuruan, show that some citizens have ignored the constitutional rights of other citizens.

The worst thing was that the authorities seemed to forget that religious freedom is protected by the Constitution that they seemed to be helpless when a fanatic group using the symbol of a religion brutally attacked the houses, places of worship of other religions and even killed 3 people in the above mentioned incidents.

The most horrifying thing was that the authorities do not seemed to be annoyed when the said fanatic group threatened that they will oust the government of President SBY if their organization is disbanded.

The above situation not only worried people in Indonesia, but also Indonesians living abroad. For example fellow blogger Rima Fauzi and Imelda Tenyala in Brussels, Belgium have initiated the Solidarity Movement for Religious Freedom in Indonesia (Gerakan Solidaritas Kebebasan Beragama di Indonesia) which can be contacted at : solidaritasberagamaindonesia@gmail.com.

I hope that each and every citizens of Indonesia would accept the fact that Religious Freedom is protected by the Constitution and every differences/disputes would be settled peacefully and amicably.

Don't forget that we love either freedom or peace !

@Wisata Murah,
The situation nowadays is very difficult, on the one hand people love freedom of religion, speech etc.
But on the other hand people want peace. So everyone should control themselves in practicing freedom so as not to annoy or offend others.

@Utomo,
Yes Pak, there should be a balance between freedom and peace. In this connection the government should be firm in their speech and action.

Hi Harry

It's so heartening that Indonesia,
a land of majority Muslim population is so forward thinking and mature in matters relating to freedom , rights and politics.

No doubt there are extremists in every country, I really take my hats off to the Indonesian people who stand up to voice and defend the freedom, even if its the rights of others not belonging to their same religion.

In this aspect, Indonesia is much better than most of its Asean counterparts.

Religious freedoms can be hard earned for some societies. I respect my own country's relgious and political freedoms.

@Bear Wife,
Thank you for pointing out that actually development of freedom is good and even the best in the region.
But freedom should be accompanied by economic and industrial development otherwise it would be catastrophic.

@Peter/Kiwi,
Every country has it own problems.
Your country New Zealand can be considered as a homogeneous country i.e most people are from Great Britain, and are Christians therefore no religious problem exists.

kebebasan beragama YES, penistaan agama NO!
Jangan pakai nama ISLAM kalo masih mengabaikan AL QURAN & HADIST. Bilang aja ada agama baru namanya Ahmadiyah. Mari kita berpikir jernih, cari info sebanyak2nya jangan mau dikibuli media yang suka ngibul!

Tentang komentar anda :
Ahmadiyah memang menyimpang dari dasar Islam yaitu Syahadat yang secara tegas menyatakan Nabi Muhamad sebagai Rasul terakhir.
Mungkin sebaiknya menjadikan agama sendiri agar bebas.
