MUI & 2012

The movie 2012 is a story about Doomsday based on the ancient Mayan calendar that the world will end on 21 December 2012.

In Indonesia, the movie becomes very popular after branches of the Indonesian Muslim Clerics Council (MUI) in Malang-East Java and Solo-Central Java accused that the movie is against Islamic concept of Doomsday, and threatened to issue edict to ban the movie.

However, this opinion was not shared by the Chairman of National MUI Amidhan who said that he personally doesn't mind with the movie as long as it is not linked with Doomsday which can only be decided by God.

For detailed information regarding the movie 2012, please click here, here, here, here and here.

Although MUI's edict is not part of our national legal system, therefore cannot be legally enforced, however considering that MUI is the highest official Muslim organization in Indonesia, such edict would be quite influential, therefore might cause confusion in society.

Considering the fact that Muslims in Indonesia are now smart enough to tell the difference between good and bad, I hope that in the future, MUI's Edict would focus on matters that directly effects Muslims as majority in Indonesia, for example Edict against Corruption (Fatwa Haram).

Only a movie ... Indonesian society will not be affected .... at most visits and through it away! Main the Kiai or scholars to give the correct view of Resurrection problem, first try to see which ones are not aligned correctly so, that's all .... kok repot .......!

Nuansa Pena,

Thank you for your comment.
Most Indonesians are quite matured therefore would not be affected by the movie.

It's pretty harmless stuff I guess. The movie is ( just another crazy but catchy grim fairy tale) and the MUI comment is ("Take care: our Doomsday is the only genuine Doomsday").

Any multinational would do the same; it's public relations machine would immediately start a worldwide mega-campaign to warn the public if fake products with a pretty similar logo as the one of the own company, would appear on the market.

Colson,

The movie is just another science fiction, as such should not be taken too seriously.

I haven't seen it yet, and haven't really decided if I want to, however I learned several years ago about the Mayan belief, and saw a couple of programs about it. From an anthropological and archeological view, its really very interesting.

The Mayan calendar basically repeated a cycle every so many decades (the exact number I can't remember) with a numeric base, also based on Astronomy. Apparently this cycle stops at the year 2012, never to repeat, therefore the basis of the prophesy.

Meutia Halida Khairani,
You are right, we should see the movie from the hi-tech it used, and everyone are free to comment on it.

Willow and Wattle,
Thank you for highlighting about the Mayan calender as the basis for the prophesy.

It is not the end of the day that is on the movie. It is just the days when the tectonic plates are shifting and the shifts make massive earthquakes and tsunamis across the globe. So this is not about the end of the day because people still live in the modern Noah's arks from that catastrophic day on until the global flood recedes...

If those clerics of MUI watch this movie they will realise that this movie is telling nothing of the end of the day. And they don't have to decree anything about that flick...

Yari,

Your scientific based explanation about what triggered the gigantic waves may have been correct.
But the height of the waves that almost reach the top of mount himalaya, depicts doomsday.

Stuart,
