Last night our national football team was beaten by the Qatar team with a score of 2-3.
Playing in front of an audience of 28,000 at the GBK Stadium in Jakarta, our team, spearheaded by striker Cristian Gonzalez who made the two goals, didn't show their best performance, while the Qatar team played very well.
With this result, our team's chance to win the Asian qualification for the World Cup 2014 became very slim. It has to win three other matches against Qatar (11 Nov), Iran (20 Nov) and Bahrain (Feb 2012).
Frankly speaking, I am not really surprised with the result of above match. It is not that I doubt the capability of our team's players, but I am very disappointed with the management of football in this country.
I don't know much about football but I felt that the change of chairman of the football association (PSSI) several months ago followed by the improper changing of coaches failed to improve performance quality of the team.

Football Leadership
Football is the most popular sports game in Indonesia.
Because of this, many politicians have made efforts to join the management of the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI), so that they can be popular and people want to elect them in the general election, or perhaps the President would want to pick them as Cabinet Minister or other governmental positions.
I believe that's the reason why so many people have nominated themselves as candidate Chairman of PSSI which will be elected during its congress in Jakarta this Friday and Saturday.
The most ambitious were Army Chief of Staff General George Toisutta and businessman Arifin Panigoro, that when their candidacies were rejected by the world football federation FIFA, they appealed with the Court of Sport Arbitration (CAS) tribunal in Switzerland.
Their persistence has made the caretaker of PSSI i.e. General (Ret.) Agum Gumelar very angry and accused General Toisutta of using the military institution to force his way into the PSSI leadership.
Considering that the conflict in PSSI's leadership has been going on for too long, I hope that all the candidates would give priority to what is best for PSSI and the development of football in Indonesia.
I also hope that General Toisutta and businessman Arifin Panigoro would let others who are more skilled in matters related to football to lead PSSI.

Too Many Foolishness
Today, 1 April, is widely recognized and celebrated as a day where many people play all kinds of jokes and foolishness.
The day is marked by the commission of good humoured or funny jokes, hoaxes, and other practical jokes of varying sophistication on friends, family members, teachers, neighbors, work associates, etc.
But unfortunately, unlike previous years, no one ever tried to tell jokes, hoaxes or surprised me today.
Maybe it is because people are too sick and tired with the so many funny, foolish, stupid and surprising things that have happened in our society recently, such as :
- The House of Representatives' refusal to investigate the Tax Mafia Case.
- The Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) leadership dispute
- The on-and-off Cabinet Reshuffle
- The unstable coalition government
- The House of Representatives' plan to build a very expensive new building
I hope that from now on there will not be to much fools in Indonesia, so that we can celebrate April Fool's Day again next year.

Immature Football
Last night, the General Secretary of the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) Nugraha Besoes announced the cancellation of the association's congress in Pekanbaru, Riau province, whose agenda among others is to elect new chairman to replace the very controversial Nurdin Halid who will end his term on 19 April 2010.
Tempointeraktif quoted Nugraha as saying that the decision was made after a meeting between PSSI executive committee and representatives of the Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) and Asian Football Confederation (AFC). The reason was because the congress has went out of control because of disturbances by certain parties who want to take over PSSI leadership.
According to Kompas newspaper, what happened was that 78 delegation out of 100 delegations from the associations branches in the country have decided to take over the organization of the congress from PSSI management and set up an Appeal Committee and an election Committee to elect new Chairman latest by 30 April. They also canceled some previous decisions made by PSSI.
I am not surprised on how the congress has ended up, because from the beginning Nurdin Halid has stated that he wants to be re-elected in spite of his poor performances, whereas his rival Army Chief of Staff General George Toisutta also show the same ambition. In stead of trying to work together to find a win-win solution, each of them tried to dominate the congress.
Under PSSI's above immature leadership, it is difficult to expect our football team would perform maturely thus better than they used to be..

Football oh Football
All of my life I have never really love playing or watching football matches.
I played or watched football matches merely to have some good times with my friends who love football.
That was before our national football team played at the ASEAN football tournament i.e. the AFF-Suzuki Cup 2010 last December.
After that, I never missed any match played by our team, discussions about it in the media, and also discussed with friends about the said tournament.
By watching football I could get away from all the ugly news about what's been happening around us i.e Corruption, Injustice, Poverty, Unemployment, Dirty Politicians, et cetera et cetara.
And when our team loose, I didn't mind at all because they tried their best but the Malaysian team was better and deserve to be champion. Anyway, the AFF-Suzuki Cup tournament was a tournament among ASEAN countries, so the most important thing was to maintain the spirit of camaraderie.
This can be seen from the facts that not long after the tournament was over, Malaysian Striker Mohd Safee Sali was transferred to the club Pelita Jaya, and Philipine Strikers James and Phillips Younghusband were transferred to the club Jakarta 1928.
What's disappointing for me was the management of football run by All Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) lead by Nurdin Halid since 2003, including several years when he was jailed for corruption, who proudly declared that he is a member of the Golkar Party and only obeyed his party boss Aburizal Bakrie.
Considering that PSSI is a sport organization funded by the state, Nurdin's attitude has annoyed President SBY and his Democrat Party which is actually in coalition with the Golkar Party.
PSSI's failure to develop better football players and team during Nurdin's leadership has inspired the birth of the Indonesian Premier League (LPI) initiated by businessman/politician Arifin Panigoro. PSSI rejected LPI because they said they already have the Indonesian Super League (LSI). And based on Nurdin's lobby, the international football association FIFA refused to recognize LPI. This has made many people protest and demand for changes in PSSI and asked him to resign.
As Nurdin's office term in PSSI is about to end, he nominated himself and Nirwan Bakrie, brother of Aburizal Bakrie as candidates for the next Chairman and Vice Chairman of PSSI. They have successfully made the candidates qualification committee to dismiss nomination of Army Chief of Staff General George Toisutta and businessman/ politician Arifin Panigoro as candidates.
Anti-Nurdin protests were getting more wild every day, called for PSSI Revolution and took over PSSI office after our pre-Olimpic games team loose 1-3 against Turkmenistan a few days ago.
Considering the above, I felt that football in Indonesia has been contaminated by non-sports interests of those who are managing PSSI. I hope that PSSI would soon be managed by people who have never commited crime, free from non-sport interests and really want to dedicate themselves to develop football in Indonesia.

Politicians and Football
2010 has left us with many home works that must be carried out in 2011, i.e. the eradication of Corruption, Poverty and Injustice.
We have among others, the mysterious Bank Century bail-out, the shaky leadership of the Corruption Eradication Commission, and prosecution of Taxman Gayus Tambunan.
Besides, we also have the inter-religion relationship which is often shaky when it comes to rights of minorities.
On top of that, there are the maneuvers made by political parties to prepare for the general elections and presidential elections in 2014, whereby according to our Constitution President SBY must end his second office term.
Although there is still no official announcement, however major political parties have been giving signals to the public about who would be their Presidential candidates.
President SBY's Democrat Party has the First Lady Any Yudoyono. The Golkar Party has its Chairman Aburizal Bakrie. And the opposition Indonesian Democratic Party in Struggle has the daughter of former President Megawati, Puan Maharani.
Various efforts have been made by the politicians, the most notable were made by Bakrie who gave Three Billion Rupiah and land area of Twenty Five Hectares to our national team as bonus for their success in reaching the Final Rounds of the recent AFF-Suzuki Cup football tournament.
Further, the Chairman of the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) Nurdin Halid, a member of Golkar Party, has publicly announced that his decision to lower the ticket price for the tournament from Seventy Five Thousand Rupiah to Fifty Thousand Rupiah was made based on the request of Bakrie as his Party's boss.
In response to Golkar Party's above moves, and growing public demands for Nurdin Halid's resignation from PSSI, Arifin Panigoro, member of the Reform Democratic Party who supported President SBY, has initiated the creation of the independent Indonesian Premier League (LPI).
Nurdin Halid and PSSI have declared that LPI is illegal and requested the Police to stop its activities.
I felt that the above situation is very ugly and not healthy for the development of football in Indonesia which is now showing some improvements. Therefore in order to make football develop well, I strongly believe that PSSI should be managed by people who are free from any political background.

Malaysia: Champion, Indonesia: Runner-Up
The Indonesian team beats the Malaysian team this evening with a score of 2-1 in the second leg of the Final Round of the AFF-Suzuki Cup football tournament in Jakarta.
However, the Indonesian team failed to be Champion, because the Malaysian team have beat them with a score of 0-3 in the first leg match in Kuala Lumpur last Sunday.
Therefore, the Malaysian team became the Champion, congratulations! and the Indonesian team became Runner-Up, congratulations!.
In spite of this fact, I am very proud of our team's players, Nasuha and Ridwan who made the above two goals, Gonzales, Okto, Arif, Irfan, Markus and all the other players for their hard works. Thank you very much!
A very big thank you to Coach Alfred Riedl and his assistants who have done their very best to our team.
Moreover, I would like to thank 80,000 supporters of our team who have watched tonight's match peacefully at the Bung Karno Stadium.

Getting Ready for the next Match
The Indonesian national football team was beaten 0-3 by the Malaysian team during the first leg of the Final Round of the AFF-Suzuki Cup in Kuala Lumpur last night.
During the first 45 minutes of the match, both teams have been playing quite balanced, therefore no goal was made.
In the next 45 minutes, the matched was stopped for awhile after our team's goal keeper Markus Horison protested against the frequent use of laser beams that struck his eyes thus obstructed his sightings. But after five minutes the match was resumed.
Our national players became discouraged and unfocused after the Malaysian players made their first goal, followed by second and third goals.
In my opinion, our team lose the match because the players do not play as good as they used to be, and the Malaysian team has played very well.
In spite of the above, I believe that our team still has a chance to become champion if it can get more than three goals in the second leg of the Final Round which will be held in Jakarta on Wednesday.
Why ? Because the players will be playing in front of more than 80,000 supporters and on the same old ground where they have beaten the same Malaysian team 5 - 1 few weeks ago.
Let us hope that our team will learn from their mistakes and do a lot much better this time.

Indonesia vs Philippines : 1 - 0
The Indonesian national football team beats the Philippines 1-0 in the AFF-Suzuki Cup Semi Final at the Bung Karno Main Stadium in Jakarta.
Christian Gonzales
The single goal was made by striker Christian Gonzales at the 32nd minutes of the first round, watched by 80,000 people including President SBY and the First Lady Ani Yudoyono.
According on AFF rules, the Semi Final should be held on a home and away basis, and tonight's match was supposed to be hosted by the Philippines in their country, but considering that they do not have football stadium that meets AFF's requirements, therefore the Philippines have chosen to host the first leg in Jakarta.
The second leg of the Semi Final shall be held at the same stadium next Sunday, in which our team only need to hold the Philippines draw in order to go to the final round and face the winner of the matches between Malaysia and Vietnam. In the first leg in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia won 2-0. The second leg shall be held in Vietnam next Saturday.
I hope that our team will always be successful all the way. God Bless Indonesia

Indonesia and the World Cup
Indonesia is not one of the countries that is eligible to participate in the World Cup international soccer championship in South Africa.
However, the result of the final match between Spain and Holland has caused one man dead and two wounded in the Province of Maluku.
Please find below an article about this that I have quoted from the Brisbane Times.
This is a very sad news. I wonder what would happen if Indonesia become one of the participant in the World Cup.

One dead in 'World Cup clash' in Indonesia
July 11, 2010
One Indonesian has been killed and two wounded as rival World Cup fans clash in Indonesia.
Violence broke out between two groups of villagers on Maluku island and several houses were set on fire, police said on Saturday.
It was not immediately clear which teams the rival factions were supporting or how the villager died.
But Maluku police chief Totoy Indra was quoted by local radio saying: "The clash was triggered by a celebration of a winning World Cup team in the area."
Indra said the wounded were being treated in hospital.
He said the situation had returned to normal but police were braced for further clashes.
