Indonesia is a Potential Geothermal Superpower

During the Asia Pacific Summit for the Climate Project in Jakarta last January, Nobel Prize Laurette and former US Vice President Al Gore said that Indonesia has the potential to become the world's Geothermal Energy Superpower.

Al Gore has reason to say that because according to U.P.I Indonesia claims about 40 percent of the world's geothermal reserves
.
Last March Indonesia's Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry revised the country's geothermal potential to 28,100 megawatts, up from 27,000 megawatts a decade ago.

The ministry's geological agency said that with 30 years of operation, Indonesia's revised geothermal potential is equal to 12 billion barrels of oil. That compares with the country's current oil reserves of 6.4 billion barrels.

Under Indonesia's national energy policy, the government aims to obtain 95,000 megawatts of power from geothermal sources by 2025. Less than 1,200 megawatts of geothermal energy has been explored.

I hope that the government would immediately carry out its plan to develop Geothermal power as a source for electricity, so that we do not have to build a nuclear reactor in the near future.

This is a huge opportunity - and the technology has been well developed already.

It is a by far better solution than nuke power is - though I guess the gigantic economy is going to be still needs even more sustainable and safe energy alternatives.

I guess a intensive public debate on the national energy policies is ( should be) imminent.

Yes you are right, in the long term we need to find other alternatives including nuclear reactor. In this case every plan should be socialize to public and public debate should be held. It would of course take long time.

NZ has a small geothermal industry in the central North Island. It also provides hot water for nearby towns as well.

I would like to see Indonesia fully utilise their geothermal assets.

sudah mulai diproduksi menjadi tenaga listrik di beberapa tempat.
investasi yg dilakukan biasanya akan memikirkan faktor kerusakan akibat bencana alam, karena sumber geotermal berada dekat gunung aktif.

Everyone could learn valuable lessons from the disaster that cause the rectors to collapse in operation and find some other alternative or take better measurement.

But in Japan's case, I'm sure they had done so, but when its against nature, nothing can be done.

Unfortunately, building geothermal plants will not be enough to cover the electricity needs. That is why it is good to use solar, biomass and wind in order to meet some of the electricity needs in a certain area. Nothing can be compared with the level of energy one nuclear plant produces. That is why many countries still keep their nuclear plants running because the energy from green sources is not enough to cover the electricity needs in certain areas.

Hi Terrans,
You are right that nothing can be compared with the level of energy one nuclear plant produces.
The experience of Japan as one of the most advanced country, with very disciplined people, yet face difficulty in handling explosion of its reactor, is a clear warning to other country that wants to build nuclear reactor.
Until they are ready, better to find and develop other sources.
