Yogyakarta oh Yogyakarta

More than one month has passed since the eruption of Mount Merapi that killed more than 350 people.

As the volcano alert level has been reduced and most of the 250 thousands evacuees were allowed to return to their homes, the people of Yogyakarta were surprised by a statement of President SBY who called their governor i.e Sultan Hamengkubuwono X, a Monarch.

                                      Sultan Hamengkubuwono X                     President SBY
The statement was made in connection with the President's plan to introduce a law that will require the Governor of Yogyakarta to be elected directly by the people like other governors in Indonesia, thus different from what has been done until now i.e appointed by the central government.

Yogyakarta oh Yogyakarta.. it's polemik! I think President "SBeye" must to think another main problem in our country rather than keistimewaan Yogyakarta. Thanks Harry

Hi Deasy,
I agree with you, right now there are other pressing matters that
the Prez need to pay attention on
like corruption and poverty.

TUKANG CoLoNG,
Setuju sekali!

Living in a parliamentary democracy that is a ( constitutional) Kingdom as well, and where the twelve provinces are undemocratically headed by an appointed official, I'm accustomed to democratic anomaly. These are not urgent matters but they should change ultimately.

A ruling Sultan who rules by definition is a democratic anomaly also.. But apparently he is a revered and loved anomaly.

Though SBY has a point (his idea seems to be that the Sultan will be a honorary governor and be able to run for the real thing), it is doubtful whether a lot of people think this is an urgent matter. I guess not, especially since Yokja ( and the Sultan of the time) had this special place in post war Indonesia history.

Hi Colson,

Representatives of the people of Yogya seemed to be very persistent in defending the Sultan. They appear everywhere and very often, on the streets and official forum, many of them demand referendum. They said that under present system Yogya is doing fine, people are happy, that very important.
Now they are even doing it in Jakarta, members of parliament, lawyers, activists on daily TV talk shows.
Other provinces whose governors were elected directly by people, show that whole lots of money spent for campaigns etc. So after they were elected they have to get lots of money by corruption.
Whereas in Yogan there is no election and everything okay.

Hmm, many people also think that issue about Yogya is only to make people forget about GAYUS :)

@Imtikhan,
Terima kasih, semoga hari ini lebih baik dari kemarin.

@Ria/Dream Catcher,
You are right, many people suspect that this is only an effort to distract people's attention from far more serious matters.

@Harry,
The president must stop talking and complaining, he must start serious actions against corruption and poverty.
