Daniel Sahuleka

There were five Dutch musicians that I have known and liked, i.e Blue DiamondsShocking BlueFocus, Golden Earrings, and Daniel Sahuleka.

I am not sure about the first four musicians, but I'm sure that Daniel Sahuleka is still active singing and playing music.

Last Thursday night, he appeared on TVOne's one hour show singing his hits among others "Don't Sleep Away the Night" and "You make my world so Colorful"  almost the same way he did around 30 years ago. Frankly speaking, I was mesmerized. And from the look on faces of the audiences, including Daniel's wife Alice, I can tell they all felt the same way too.

In the interview, a.o with senior singer Bob Tutupoli, Daniel said in fluent Bahasa Indonesia, that he kept coming back here because he has many fans, many relatives and he like Indonesia. This is obvious, because he was born in Semarang, Central Java, on 6 December 1950, and his parents originated from the Province of Maluku, although later on he became a Dutch citizen.

Watching Daniel on TV, reminded me that Indonesia has friends in the Netherlands, including those originating from the islands of Maluku. I personally know this because my late brother's ex-wife Cherry is living there with her daughter Kemilau and relatives. And my other niece got a Law Master degree there. Besides, I also have friends there including blogger Colson, who until now always gave positive opinions about Indonesia.

'Morning sunshine's in our room
Now that room is back in tune
Autumn start this day with a smile
And laugh at my beautiful love one
Who's lying beside me

You so far away in your sleep
Who can tell what dream you may dream
You don't know that I was drawing
With my finger on your sweet young face
Vague as a meaning words

You make my world so colorful
I've never had it so good
My love I thank you for all the love
You gave to me
....'
Daniel Sahuleka

Please have a great week!
Regards from Romania!

Hi Wind,

I am glad to see you again.

You surprised me, I thought that Daniel Sahuleka is only known in Holland, Indonesia and few other countries.

Thank you very much for 'sending' me lyrics of the song 'You make My world so Colorful'. It is also one of my favorites until now.

@Teras Info,
Daniel memang mantap, waktu dia nyanyikan lagu2 pertama kali tahun 1977 dan 1978 suara yang hampir persis sama dengan waktu muncul di TV kemarin.

Wow. You apparently know more about Dutch Rock'n Roll scene than I do.

Most of the band you mentioned are voices from the past - the Blue Diamonds, who happened to live three kilometres from my home, ended with the death of Ruud ( in 2000), when Mariska Veres died in 2006 that was the end of Shocking Blue and though both Thijs van leer and Jan Akkerman are still active musicians, Focus isn't any-more. You didn't mention the founding fathers of Dutch R. 'n R., the Tielman Brothers. They stopped long ago but Andy Tielman is still going strong and even performed in Jakarta last year.

On the other hand the Golden Earring - with the original musicians- is now the world's oldest - thouhg not the richest or most successful- rock 'n Roll band ( '61, older even than the Rolling Stones).

And yes, I guess you are right, the average Dutchman has a vague but positive perception of Indonesia. Though I think the Netherlands isn't a subject of main concern to many Indonesians, relatively many Dutchman have an interest in Indonesia. Many entrepreneurs have been investing in the RI over the years. Many Dutchman choose Indonesia for a holiday destination( well, most of them an organized tour of Sumatra, Java and especially Bali).And of course approximately 1,5 million Dutchman have ( though often fading) sentimental and 'return to the roots' ties with some places in the archipelago.

@Fir'aun NgebLoG,
I am glad that you like it, thanks.

@Aciid!!!
Dia memang populernya tahun '70, '80 tapi rupanya masih punya banyak fans disini.

@Colson,
I agree that actually there is no problem between Indonesia and the Netherlands.

I hope President SBY and his aides will realize this, or if not would at least go to top Legal and PR consultants and the govt in the Netherlands, if the so called RMS make another threat against him or any other Indonesians.

Re: Dutch musicians
Yes I forgot to mention the Tielman Brothers, and also Kayak. Thank you for furnishing me with information about the other musicians. I came to Shocking Blue concert when they visited Jakarta in the '70s.
