The Military Today

Today, 5 October, the Indonesian National Military also known by abbreviation of its Indonesian name i.e. TNI, celebrated its 65th anniversary.

The celebration was held at the at the Halim Perdana Kusuma Airbase in East Jakarta. lead by President Susilo Bambang Yudoyono, attended by some cabinet ministers and commanders of the Army, the Navy and the Air force.

I hope that at the age of 65, TNI would be matured enough to position itself as an organization which would always based its plans and actions only for the very best interests of the country and the people of Indonesia, therefore would not merely be the tools of the government or the parliament.

Admitting I not a great supporter of any of the world's armed forces, I sincerely wish them to be up to date and professional, to stay in the barracks at peacetime and out of politics and always to be subordinate to the country's political leadership. Well, the kind of army in times of Nasution's leadership.

Good news seems to be the new commander - who for once wasn't a army general ( but an admiral I believe).

@Ibucketbot,
Our air force has already purchased a squadron of Sukhoi 27 and 30.
The celebration was held yesterday and I didn't attend it.

@Colson,
I agree that the armed forces
should be equipped with up to
date equipments, professional and under civilian rule.

@Irma/Senja,
Senang sekali bertemu kembali dengan anda.

@Utomo,
Iya pak, selamat

@Ferdinand,
Semoga TNI terus menjaga kedamaian di negara kita.

I'm not sure I agree this time Harry. The army should always be the tool of the state (in this case the parliament, the elected president). In my opinion part of the problem in Indonesia used to be the army acting in its own interests, and not in the interests of the state elected representatives. Given how the army was created and funded its understandable.

Colson: Wasn't Nasution responsible for increasing the role of the Army in the business of the state vis a vis the policy of Dwifungsi? My ex always maintains that he should have been president hehe.

@Pj,
It's good to see you again.
I agree that in a democratic society the military should be subordinate of the government.
But especially for Indonesia, at present the military should not "blindly" do all the things instructed by the government.

@Wind,
Thank you for dropping by.
