The Batik

On 2 October 2009, the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultutal Organization (UNESCO) has announced that Batik as Indonesia's traditional textile dying technique as an intangible element of the world's cultural heritage.

Since then Indonesians wear Batik shirt/dress more often than before a.o wearing them to the office on Fridays.

The growth in consumption of Batik textile and garment is obviously a very good development for Indonesia's Batik textile industries.

However, with the ASEAN China Free Trade Agreement effective 1 January 2010, Batik textiles and garments from other countries especial cheap ones from the People's Republic of China have also enjoyed this growing market.

Since my daughters-in-law bring one or two each time they return from a visit to Indonesia, my drawers are abundant with these beautiful shirts :). Now I read they are jeopardized by Chinese imitation I will make sure to demand they bring authentic Indonesian ones only :).

By the way why is Friday the Batik day at office ("Since then Indonesians wear Batik shirt/dress more often than before a.o wearing them to the office on Fridays")? Any religious or nationalistic implication?

@Ferdinand,
Anda benar, dengan pengakuan Unesco maka kita harus jaga dan lestarikan.

@Peter/Kiwi,
Yeah they are now in the market.

@Colson,
It is not difficult to tell the difference between the original and the Chinese made cheap ones.
Re wearing batik on Friday:
Friday the last weekday for most offices in jakarta and vicinity, so they let employees wear batik.
