Are Students more dangerous than FPI?

In response to the demonstrations by thousands of people who protested the first anniversary of the second term of President Susilo Bambang Yudoyono in several Indonesian cities yesterday,  the Police have used tear gas, water cannon and fire arms.

In Jakarta, the Police has shot the leg of Farrel, one of the hundreds of students of the University of Bung Karno who take part in the demonstration.

This response is different from the Police's reaction on the violent protests often carried out by a group of vigilante who call themselves the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI).

Considering the above, I wonder whether the students are considered to be more dangerous than FPI ?

Please find below an article about yesterday's incident that I have quoted from The Jakarta Globe.

The header is phrasing exactly what I wrote in slightly other words in a previous comment.

As for the investigation the Police promised, I think it is comparable to a butcher who promises to investigate himself the meat the customer complained about.

Of course there should be an independent authority to monitor the actions of the Police and investigate problematic situations the Police gets involved in.

At least, in my opinion, the new Police commander deserves a sound slap on his fingers.

Harry, that is an easy question to answer. Are the students more dangerous than the FPI zealots? To other societies? NO! To the police? YES! No matter how violent the FPI zealos are, they have never harmed the police before! The FPI zealots only harms night-clubs, bars, massage parlours, etc (especially during Ramadan) and other classes of society that support "new" religions. Have you ever heard that the FPI zealots deliberately attack the police before? I bet you haven't.
On the other hands, the students are likely to intentionally attack the police whenever they are in action on the streets! So that explains why the police acts more leniently on those FPI zealots. I concluded that the shoot-it-on-the-spot order is rather on their own safety instead of restoring the order! But that's only my humble opinion.

is this related with the selection of the nasional police chief? *pretend to be stupid* ghehehe.

I support the dissolution of community organizations that tend to commit acts of violence, also stop the anarchist demo in making jams and damaging roads.

@Colson,
About the header, I must have been inspired by your writing.
I agree that there should be an independent authority to investigate
this case and other allegations on the police, especially with the new police chief.

@Yari,
I fully agree with you that only the police (and the govt) think that students are more dangerous than the FPI. And the on-the-spot shoot order is for their own safety sake rather then for public order.

@Reborn,
The media reported that the new police chief and the FPI have been have good relationship.
I hope that this is not true.
I also hope all groups that conduct violent actions would be banned so that people can live more peacefully.

Hmm. I don't really think that they are dangerous. It just they are more easy to influence or manipulate.

Pak Utomo,
The way both cases are approached, i.e with double standard, is confusing.

frankly speaking I never think that FPI is dangerous just the people who like make sin and evil attitude like, drank, prostitution that very afraid with FPI but eventhough I never think to support the people that make destruction to the other people things without a clear reason

because the student are youngster, they are full of rebellion, i agree with @Passionate Blogger said...they are more easy to influence or manipulate...

IMHO the student seems easy to be provoked by an outsider so from peaceful rally it could turn ugly... People are tired from work, they do not want to face heavy traffic jam or worst...walk for miles and miles away...
Of course your question could raise people to wonder... Why the police seems softer when they deal with FPI?

@Berpikir Positif,
I appreciate your frankness and understand why you think that the FPI is not dangerous.
FPI would not be doing what they have done if the government has been firm in implementing the laws so that the police can do their job properly.

@Adetruna,
Yes you are right.

@The Dream Catcher,
That's the point I am trying to make. I am glad you mentioned it.

@Lulus Sutopo,
Thank you for the kind words

@Download Gratis,
Thanks, I'll check your site.

They call themselves "student" but all they can do are just shouting and burning car wheel instead of studying and making good projects related to their major...
FPI is dangerous too because they do violence "for the sake" of religion though I believe that religion never teach about "violence" but "love and wisdom" in the first place.

Yeah, people should learn about "love and wisdom" first before act. right...?

Hi Amelia,
Although I agree that the duty
of students is to study, however as citizens they have rights to express themselves and other people especially the less fortunate ones.
Re: FPI, the govt should be firm in implementing the laws and make sure that those who violate must be investigated, prosecuted and punished by the court.

ASPemusik,
I appreciate your opinion on the matter which shared the opinion of Berpikir Positif.
But Indonesia is a country based on constitution and laws, everything should be according to the law. In order to create and maintain public order, law enforcement must be done by law enforcement agencies, cannot be by any other.
