First Victims of the Pornography Law

Four women have become the first people in Bandung, West Java, to be victimized by the new Pornography Law. Here is a related article that I quoted from The Jakarta Post

BANDUNG: Authorities plan to prosecute four erotic dancers who were arrested in clubs on New Year's Eve, for allegedly having violated the new law on pornography, a police spokesman said Wednesday.

The female dancers and two male club managers were detained in Bandung, West Java Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Dade Ahmad said.

"They appeared to have been preparing for a striptease and *were wearing sexy clothing'," Ahmad said, after police raided Bellair Cafe and the Music Lounge after midnight.

Police confiscated skimpy underwear and nearly US$200 in cash believed to have been from tips, Ahmad said, adding that they could be sentenced to between five and 10 years' imprisonment if found guilty.

Ahmad said the six will be the first people in Bandung to be prosecuted under the new law, following the Bandung mayor's recent announcement of a crackdown on behavior considered un-Islamic.

Bandung Mayor Dada Rosada told reporters Wednesday he was also considering revoking cafes' operating licenses. - JP

Must be traumatic for the girls.

I would have liked to see the police try to break up the entertainment program that management had organised for the year end tournament at my golf course. For some reason they hired sexy dancers for a mixed family event. The girls received a very warm applause from all present including the wives and kids. Bizarre but entertaining.
Go Figure.

They already banned jaipong in west java - i suppose this is more of the same. Good to see police resources being utilised so effectively and that the people of bandung have their priorities clear.

Pj,

Good to see you back.

The saddest thing was that those girls were changed of violating the law that carries a penalty of 5 up to 10 years imprisonment.
While at almost the same time many others who corrupted billions rupiah were only punished less or even untouched.
I hope that they would start dealing with far more important things for the people like providing jobs, fighting crimes, corruption etc. etc.

Now Indonesia, which was quite religiously liberal compare to Malaysia, moving into the extreme as well.

Scary

Ranfuchs,

Actually Indonesian Moslems are mostly moderates. But politicians tried to use religion to win voters especially this year several regional elections will be held.

One would have thought that there are much more serious matters that the police should be attending to other than arresting a few women in skimpy outfits.

I agree with PJ, go figure!

Rob,

Arresting those poor girls is a lot much easier & less risky compared to busting crimes which are quite a lot in Bandung. Beside that such move would be a good PR for the Regional Chiefs (Mayor/Resident) and their political parties in connection with the elections/pilkada later this year

Making it illegal only drives it underground and then the elicitness and allure of 'sexy' dancers becomes stronger.
Oddly enough the Jakarta post has done some great stories which if the country was balanced would sadly see the interviewees in jail

Luke,

You are right, if such dancers are declared illegal, they'll be more attractive. People tend to love things which are banned.
