Fatwa Haram for Terrorism

The Indonesian Ulama Council (MUI) is the highest Muslim authority which can issue a Fatwa or Edict declaring that it is Haram/Forbidden for Muslims to do or not to do something.

For example, a few months before last April's Parliamentary election, MUI has issued a Fatwa which Forbid Muslims from refusing to vote. Beside that, it has also issued a Fatwa which declared Yoga chanting as Haram.

Although a Fatwa is not part of our national legal system, however considering that MUI is the highest Islamic religious authority in Indonesia, therefore many Muslims individuals & organizations would obey such Fatwa.

In this connection, I felt that MUI is able to help our government in eradicating Terrorism which has been reported to be conducted by Muslim fanatics in Indonesia, that is by issuing Fatwa/Edict which declare Suicide Bombing and other acts of violence as Haram/Forbidden for Muslims.
Such Fatwa/Edict would be followed by Muslim organizations in Indonesia, including Pondok Pesantren (Islamic Boarding School) which have been suspected of trainning terrorists. For details, please click here, here, here and here.

Considering the above, I felt that a Fatwa Haram for Terrorism including Suicide Bombing, would greatly minimize the number of Terrorists, therefore will make Indonesia a much better and safer place to live.

Do you really think that MUI would go for the fatwa option? They have had the chance in the past to do it and have not.

I agree that it would be an interesting move on MUI's part.

In a strict legal sense terrorism is already prohibited in the law. So, if these bombings are deemed to be terrorist activity then they can be prosecuted under Indonesian law.

Would a fatwa add anything to the already existing prohibition?

I am not sure whether MUI will issue such fatwa.
You are right that we have laws prohibiting terrorism, however some of the crimes were not tried, or not properly tried, due to lack of, or insufficient evidence, or unknown reasons.
The worst thing is that there is a misconception about Jihad(holy war)
and Sahid(holy warrior) among some Muslims living in the rural area.
Fatwa Haram would at least clarify that suicide bombing is not an act of Jihad, and the bombers are not Sahid.

I think MUI will not issue fatwa haram for terrorism, because they tend to be fanatic fanatic lately. This can be seen from the fatwa they issued about Yoga, Smoking & Non Voting.

I will have to stand corrected.

It seems that the MUI has issued a fatwa on terror.

Perhaps the focus now needs to move to whether it has been, and can be, an effective deterrent.

I have read the fatwa and also some articles suggesting that some of the fatwas issued relating to terrorism are fake. However, this seems genuine enough.

Although, having read it, I am wondering two things; why hasn't the existence of the fatwa been more widely publicized, and why have there been no Muslims speaking out either way on this?

It is important to learn something new everyday, and one of the things I have learned today is that there is an MUI fatwa on terrorism ;)

Enjoy your break.

It's a pity that MUI has not socialize the fatwa. Considering that MUI has been very vocal on other matters like Voting, Smoking and Yoga, I wonder whether they are serious in issuing the fatwa for terrorism, which is definitely a far more serious matter.
