Attacks on the President and the People

Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is reported to have said that terrorists arrested on Saturday had been planning to attack him. (AFP Photo)

President Susilo Bambang Yudoyono told reporters today that he just survived a teror plot.

The Jakarta Globe quoted him as saying that today the Police has arrested two terrorists who plan to attack him during a visit to Bandung, West Java.

This news gave me mixed feelings. On the one hand I am very happy that the Police has once again been successful in protecting the President from terrorist attack.

But on the other hand I am very sad because until this moment the Police has still not been able to find out who's responsible for the series of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) Canisters explosions that have killed and injured many innocent people in the last few months.

In my humble opinion, this is weird because LPG Canisters are produced, filled-refilled and distributed legally, therefore should not be so difficult to probe compared to secretive terrorists operations.

I hope that beside protecting the President, the Police would also find out immediately who have attacked the people by producing, filling-refilling, selling low quality and explosive LPG Canisters. After all, according to our Constitution the people is the holder of sovereignty in Indonesia.

More important than a President is the People of course. So, yeah, you are absolutely right. It really IS a shame.

And it will not be over till the heritage of New Order well be definitely and totally be over and done with. These days it still is like I read in the Jakarta Globe: the other day: "All is not well with Indonesia and the country struggles to shake it's New Order Past".

Especially the state of law (Police, AGO and even courts) sucks and so does the fact that a large part of the ominous old politico-economical oligarchy manages to be still in charge (the Bakries of the country).

That's I think the problem - rather than the president.

@Arcman,
Actually I don't agree any violent against anybody any where. That's why I said that I am happy that the Police has arrested those who plot terror on the president.
The point I am trying to make is that if terrorist's plan can be detected, why can we find out whose responsible for all the LPG Canister explosions that have killed so many people and injured others in the last few months.

@Colson,
I agree that the problem is not with the president but with those who let the distribution of low quality LPG Canisters to households
therefore killing so many people and injuring many others in recent months.
However, a one of the persons who gave him more than 60% votes in last two presidential elections I felt that I have the right to be very disappointed at the way he performed so slowly and indecisive in addressing problems like the LPG Canisters explosions.

@ Harry...

Mate, just returning the favour (seeing you commented on my SBY piece and all).

It is an interesting link to the LPG fiasco. But, it is a link that could be made to any number of current and recent past events.

For example, the coppers seem to be able to stop all these plots to kill the president but they cannot uncover who killed Munir...

Or, who is responsible for the ongoing mud extrusion in Sidoarjo...

Ho hum.

Hi Rob,
Yes you are right that I can also compare the success in protecting SBY with failures to bring the one responsible for the Lapindo Mud flow, Munir murder and other pending cases.
Yes, ho hum
