Singer of Pop band Peterpan, Ariel, and his model/presenter lover Luna Maya have finally broken their silence over the Sex Video Scandal that has been widely exposed by the news media last week.
Ariel and Luna denied that they starred in the Sex Video. The Jakarta Globe quoted Ariel as saying that certain people has exposed the Sex Video in connection with his band's plan to release their latest album. He therefore suspect that there must be a character assassination attempt in this case.
This is not the first time that I heard the phrase Character Assassination, but I am not really sure about the meaning. So, I Googled the phrase and found the following explanation on Wikipedia :
Character assassination is an attempt to tarnish a person's reputation. It may involve exaggeration or manipulation of facts to present an untrue picture of the targeted person. It is a form of defamation and can be a form of ad hominem argument.
For living individuals targeted by character assassination attempts, this may result in being rejected by his community, family, or members of his or her living or work environment. Such acts are often difficult to reverse or rectify, and the process is likened to a literal assassination of a human life. The damage sustained can last a lifetime or, for historical figures, for many centuries after their death.
In practice, character assassination may involve doublespeak, spreading of rumors, innuendo or deliberate misinformation on topics relating to the subject's morals, integrity, and reputation. It may involve spinning information that is technically true, but that is presented in a misleading manner or is presented without the necessary context. For example, it might be said that a person refused to pay any income tax during a specific year, without saying that no tax was actually owed due to the person having no income that year.
A person who committed Defamation using the internet can be charged with violating the Electronic Information and Transaction Law (ITE) Articles 27 and 45 with maximum punishment of six years in jail and/or maximum fine of One Billion Rupiah. Whilst Defamation in general is governed by the Penal Code (KUHP) Articles 310 and 311 with maximum punishment of nine months in jail.
Further, those who play the starring roles in a Sex Video can be charged with violating the Pornography Law.
Considering the above, it would be very interesting to know the result of Police investigation on the Sex Video case.

Was this video taken after or before the pornography law was introduced? as I have read and heard conflicting stories.
Also at what point in your opinion does a persons private videos or pictures break this law? As if something is recorded before the law came into effect, how can it break it? (unless the law back dates)
If these videos were not stolen and posted on the net and the police found them elsewhere would there be this much interest?
My final observation is, who has actually complained that these videos are offensive and why is there so much interest in them, when the government allows free access to the web and all it has to offer which is far far worse than this collection of personal videos.
I guess I am just astounded why there is so much time and energy spent on this when that could be spent solving real crimes and help people who suffer as a result of real crime.

It's great to see a wealthy life of a celebrity. But what has just happened shows us how it could have been a disgraceful payback...
Even if the peterporn-videos are proved to be fake indeed, I'm afraid the fall out of their worldwide circulation for the public persona of Ariel c.s., is irreparable.

A person claiming to be expert on this matter said that video was made in 2006 based on video time indication, thus prior to ITE Law 2008. However, there is still the Penal Code (valid since long time before) that I have also mentioned. The real truth can only be known after the Police announce result of their investigation.
If the video has been spread differently the impact would not be so strong but still it would attract public attention. Why? Because Indonesian laws (I mentioned) forbid exposure of such intimacy to the public.
The complaint to the police was submitted an NGO led by a lawyer, Farbat Abas.
I agree that attention on this case has been too much as if there is no other things more important, for that reason in my previous post “Golkar and Peterporn” and I said that this cause has diverted public attention from Golkar Party’s demand that every members of the House of Representative should be given Rp 15 Billion every year.

This police have started questioning 3 of artists who look like those in the video, so we’ll have to wait for the result first before knowing what’s exactly happened.

You are very right, whether or not the story is true or false, the damage caused on the artists image would be difficult to repair.
Fame comes with it's side effects..Too bad it can't really be repaired!

Are these offences taking place on the internet? It is the world wide web after all. Our government plans some law about illegally downloading music, but won't be venturing to censure New Zealanders doing whatever on the net.

Yes. The government is preparing a regulation that would regulate online activities.
Ariel's status is accused of ITE Law now.. Public is still waiting investigation result.. If investigation result point them as stars of the video, it means they commited zina (adultery)....
