A Day at the Competition

Yesterday morning I took my son Virya (10) to a Bey Blade Competition at Pondok Indah Mall.

For those who don't know, Beyblade is a high performance spinning top toy. An explanation about Beyblade can be found in Wikipedia (click)

Virya was very joyous, because out of the 189 participants, he won four matches therefore enable him to go to the next competition level and compete with 45 others from Pondok Indah and winners from other area in Jakarta and vicinity on 25 September 2010, at the Lippo Karawaci Mall.

I was happy because the competition provide an experience that Virya would not get at school i.e. the spirit of competing with others in a healthy and supporting environment. Whereas the fact that he became one of the winners would give him more confidence in life.

Beside that, I was also happy because among the parents who accompanied their kids to the competition, there wer people that I knew, like Heru Sanusi, a Law lecturer at Trisakti University and his wife a notary in Bogor,  Desi Thomas owner of a property agency, Emilia Contessa a popular singer in the '70s and '80s. Besides, I also met a new friend i.e. Alladin Rillo, a Filipino diplomat at the ASEAN Secretariat.

Considering the above, I was so happy to be able to accompany my son to the event which made us both so happy.

Congratulations to Virya! I am so happy for him. I think in life, healthy competition is very important. It teaches self-discipline (practicing), enhances self-esteem, boosts confidence, and one of the most important lessons is sportsmanship. Sportsmanship is carried through life in all kinds of ways. It teaches one to be humble, polite, and courteous in all walks through life if approached right. I have seen parents who will consider nothing less than winning. To me, this is dangerous. It is dangerous, because of the danger of losing self control, it is dangerous because if a child's best "is not good enough", then the child will not think much of him/herself if they do not win all the time. Competition, while it should teach people to do the best they can, should remain "fun". I am also glad you enjoyed yourself as well. You have a wonderful parental outlook.

Thank you for the wonderful compliment. Just because we are of different religious backgrounds does not mean we cannot find interest in another doctrine. Even though I believe in Jesus Christ, and that there is no other name by which we can be saved, that does not mean that other religions don't have points of interests or won't peak my curiosity. Not only that just because we are of different religions doesn't mean we can't hold the same "humanistic" interests such as children, or other things.

God Bless,

PJ

Hi PJ,
Thank you for your kind comment.
I fully agree with what you said :

I am very glad that we share the same opinion on children.
Let's keep in touch.

Harry, yes you are right. The spirit of competition must be sowed since childhood. Sometimes they have to acknowledge the reality that amongst close friends or siblings competitions must sometimes somehow exist.

However, the main purpose of a competition is not to win or to top of the group. The main purpose is to be the best we can through sportsmanship and fairness. So it doesn't matter whether one wins or loses after all someone has to win others have to lose. By maintaining this attitude we hope that the competition will not grow into hostility and after the competition is over they are still our friends and siblings no matter whether they are better or worse than us in the competition...
