Who'll Benefit from the Sex Video?

It has been around one month since the media reported about the circulation of a Video showin sexual intercourse between a man who looked like vocalist of pop band Peterpan, Ariel, and two female who looked like model and presenters i.e. his girlfriend Luna Maya, and Cut Tari.

All of this time there is nothing new about this case, the Police had only named Ariel as Suspect and although both women have been questioned time and again, but their statuses still remain Witnesses. And few days ago the Police announced that they have named eight persons who are involved in the distribution of the video as suspects. This very slow investigation is really very surprising if we compare it with the Police's recent successes in eliminating (= killing) alleged Terrorists.

Like any other news about celebrities, the development of this case has been very closely monitored and reported by the news media almost every hour of the day, as if it is the most important thing in Indonesia right now.

As a result, people pay more attention to this rubbish news than to other news which are far more important for them like the 10 to 18% Electricity Hike starting 1 July, followed by announcements about plans to increase Tariffs for : Toll Road, Transportation, Car Taxes. Besides, there are also other news about the rising prices of daily commodities, about Cylinder Gas explosions, Corruptions, etc., etc., etc. .................

Considering the above, I felt that the Sex Video have distracted public's attentions from what are actually much more important for them, and therefore saving the government from all the troubles, i.e. massive public protest, that might have been caused by those more important news.

Further, the Sex Video news benefited the print and electronic News Media who got more viewers and readers, thereby attracting more advertisements.

Furthermore, the Sex Video news benefited Ariel, Peterpan, the recording company and distributors of the band's new album which is planned to be release sometime in the near future.

it would be quite fair for us, adult ones. but for those who are underage, sex videos would be a bad contamination for they have less filter system

the government must take the appropriate actions, otherwise this would be a jurisprudence for the society

I am not entirely sure that it does benefit Ariel or his band. Even if one was to argue that any publicity is good publicity, it is still questionable whether there is any 'real' benefits to Ariel in this whole affair...

Hear, hear!

If ever there was a non issue, this is one.

(A funny one though - be it not for the suspect and witnesses)

@Edwin,
Although I agree that there should a a way to prevent under-aged children from watching those video, but there are other much important matters that should also be given very attention.

@Blog Ekspor Impor,
Appropriate action must be taken indeed.

@Rob,
Of course we cannot say for sure who will really benefit from it.
But people in the media are estimating that Ariel's new album would be sold more than 2 mio.
That would mean a lot of money for those involve in the recording.

@Colson,
Yes this is actually a funny non issue, except for those who are behind all these.

@Karzanik,
Sebagai sesama blogger Indonesia kita harus saling berbagi. Saya selalu terbuka.

I agree with what you say in your post, particularly your opinion that "people pay more attention to this rubbish news than to other news which are far more important for them".

The media will always exploit this lack of discernment on the part of the public. Journalists can often be lazy, just zoning in on something that they know will appeal to people's base desires.

Society and it's spokepiece, the media, do not always have a moral overview. This type of story happens in every country all over the world of course.

The only answer is to have people sufficiently well educated that they can recognise when they are being manipulated, when particular news items are unimportant (or merely titillating) and so on.

Mr Toad,
I agree that the best way is to make people able to tell which news are good for them and which one is not, by providing sufficient education.
In this case the news media and bloggers, could play a significant role.

Two women -- you didn't say how greedy the man was? LOL

I don't think this is beneficial to the band as a whole or to the singer in particular. His name is dirt everywhere now..how can that be good.This issue is being played up to divert attention as you have pointed out..plain and simple. Who reaps the profit..the media and the puppet master behind this.

@Peter/Kiwi,
The police found a total 32 scenes each with different women on his laptop which was reported to stolen.

@Umihoney,
I was referring to the financial possibility, but like you said moral aspect should also be consideration in this case.
The ones who really benefit would be the recording company, the puppet master and the news media.

If it is all about education; educating the public, educating the media, and educating the celebrities themselves, then could this not be a perfect "teaching moment"?

The idea of un-named "puppet masters benefiting from this scandal sounds too much like grand conspiracy theory. This is a simple case of a bloke making a sex tape (reportedly lots of them) and the public's insatiable appetite for celebrity gossip driving the continual need to keep this in the press at the expense of other more important news.

Does this sort of thing deflect time and attention from more pressing issues, yes. However, sometimes people do not mind having a little bit of time to escape from their own concerns and the more pressing 'global' issues.

My guess is that there are probably a few people out there having a little chuckle to themselves as they read and watch this drama unfold in the media.

Nevertheless, this case has given rise to some interesting issues as well. For example, the recent call by the Child Protection Commission (I think?) for the celebs involved to apologise and then withdraw from public life and cease to be the idols of others. This I would contend is a ridiculous proposition to start with. However, who made the Child Protection Commission the arbiter of all things celebrity.

The point might be here that it is not only the media driving this thing to garner attention, is it? So, perhaps who benefits includes a whole range of individuals and organisations that have yet to be noted or considered.

Apologies on the long reply, but I cannot be bothered writing a post over at my place ;)

Hi Rob,
I always like the way you write, I have been trying to learn from you but not hard enough perhaps.
Yes this could be a perfect "teaching time".
This is a simple case, but has been used by the government which I mentioned 'puppet master' for to distract public's attention from all the problems that they are actually facing, which I mentioned.
Yesterday Cut Tary and Luna Maya apologized to the Prez and govt, people for the mess caused by the video but they do not confess having played in the video.
And today the police finally named them suspects.
What is weird for me is how come it take so long for the police to come to do that. If we compare with the police's several anti terrorists actions in which they not only quickly named the suspect but also executed them on the spot thus without any due process of law.

Rob Baiton said...

Harry...

I am not sure that they deserve to be executed on the spot for making an amateur porn film ;)

They, the police, are certainly taking their good time in completing this investigation and making all the necessary links, I agree.

Unknown said...

Rob,
Of course for making amateur blue movie Ariel and co. cannot be executed. I was referring to the many Police's actions against terrorists whereby that were easily named suspects and even killed whih any court trial.
