MUI and Kopi Luwak

Kopi Luwak (Luwak Coffee) is a special type of coffee that is made from coffee beans that have been eaten by a Civet who then excreted as a whole together with its Feces

According to coffee lovers, the taste of Kopi Luwak is so special that the price per cup is very expensive.

Recently, the Indonesian Moslems Council (MUI) have been thinking about issuing a Fatwa (Edict) that forbid Moslem drinking Kopi Luwak. The reason is because Kopi Luwak has gone through a process similar to the extraction of the Civet's Feces which is considered as Najis i.e. cannot be consumed.

But after several days,  the MUI decided that Kopi Luwak can be consumed by Moslems if the beans are  cleaned properly.

MUI 's said decision will surely make the producers and sellers of Kopi Luwak very happy. Therefore, I would not be surprise if they launch massive advertisement saying that Kopi Luwak is 100% Halal (permitted).

Well, Kopi Luwak may have been cleared, but I guess that because of a number of unconvinced scribes, it will continue to hang in the balance.

Btw: though Kopi Luwak is extremely expensive in Hong Kong or LA, my son wrote he drank "a nice cup of Luwak at Pasific Place, Jakarta. Only Rp 70.000 (almost € 6). (A) nice big cup, brewed at ... table. And ... received a little certificate stating (they) drank 100% coffee Luwak".

Colson,
I wrote this post out of a curiosity on why has the question about Kopi Luwak being raised now, why not long before because the coffee has exists for ages as mentioned on your blog.
One thing for sure this controversy is a very good and cheap marketing promotion for Kopi Luwak.

@ Harry...

Thanks for linking me in.

I think it might have been free marketing for Kopi Luwak producers. My take is that the MUI has too much time on its hands and was looking for something to do, so it dived into crap coffee (pun intended).

It is just another one of those things that the MUI gets involved with that leaves people shaking their heads and wondering why the MUI ever bothered in the first place.

Hi Rob,
That was exactly my point. MUI has been doing the same thing in the past. All of which got high profile media exposure. At a time of fierce business competition, this might cause people to have any kinds of feelings.
