Two Controversial Miss Indonesia

This year, two different beauty contest committees in Indonesia have selected two women to compete in two international beauty contests i.e. Miss Universe and Miss World.

Last Friday, Qori Sandioriva (18), Puteri Aceh 2009, won the title Puteri Indonesia 2009. Puteri means Princess in English, but the contest committee prefered to use the title Miss Indonesia when she compete at Miss Universe 2010 contest next year.

Qori was protested by the Aceh Muslim Ulama who said that Qori cannot represent Aceh where women are obligated to wear hijab (head scarf), whereas Qori did not wear hijab at the contest. They also said that no contest has ever been carried out in Aceh to choose Qori as Miss Aceh 2009.

Four months earlier, another organizing committee selected Karenina Sunny Halim (22) as Miss Indonesia 2009. According to the jury, she was chosen because she speaks fluent English, highly intelligent and beautiful.

Unfortunately it was revealed that the jury was mesmerized by Karenina's fluency in English that they failed to check her ability to speak Indonesian. The contest committee explained that they give priority to English speaking ability, because they want the winner to win at the Miss World contest.

It would be very interesting to know about further news on the two "Miss Indonesia".

Harry...

I think there will be further news on this one ;)

This would be particularly so if Miss Aceh decides to don a bikini on the world stage at the international competition.

I think I wrote somewhere that she could always opt to wear the burqini. Apparently, the burqini is a bit of a fashion statement in Muslim swimwear, and is doing pretty good business in countries where the norm is to be covered.

It is a good point about the fact that there was no Miss Aceh contest held in Aceh for Acehnese women to try out for a spot on the Jakarta stage. I do not know whether that is true or not. To be honest I am not a big follower of pageants.

They are worth writing about though. If for no other reason than it gives me a reason to post an accompanying picture of a beautiful young Indonesian woman in a bikini (good for the blog visitor stats) :D

I think the Karenina choice was more problematic because she is representing Indonesia and apparently needed an interpreter to understand the Indonesian questions.

Rob,
Yeah the story is still developing
and it would be interesting to know more. I also don't usually write about pageant, only when there's irregularities like this one. I agree that celebrities, especially those wearing minimum clothes, draw visitors to blog.
A 'Burgini'? sounds interesting, I'll check your blog for it.
I hope that after 4 months, Karenina's bahasa Indonesia has improved by now.
