Miss Indonesia 2009

Miss Aceh 2009, Qori Sandiorivah, has been selected as Miss Indonesia 2009.

Qori (18) won the title on Friday night in a ceremony attended by Miss Universe 2009 Stefania Fernandez. 38 contestants from 33 provinces in Indonesia took part in the beauty contest. Qory will represent Indonesia at Miss Universe 2010 contest.

The selecting committee's choice is special, because Qori represents a province that is special i.e Aceh which require females to wear Hijab (head scarf) in public. Perhaps because Cori was born in Jakarta on 17 August 1991 and now studying at the University of Indonesia in Depok, West Java.

Although she said that she has asked permission from the Aceh government to take off her Hijab, however it would be very interesting to know how would the authorities in Aceh would react when Qori has to wear bikini in the Miss Universe contest.

Rob,
I don't know for sure.
But last year a non Aceh female model who accompanied pop band Nidji in their show in Banda Aceh was asked to leave the province, because she accidentally dropped her Hijab.

Maybe the new legislature in Aceh will begin to moderate the more conservative approach of the last one and come into line with the Govenor's viewpoint?

Duckham,
The governor's party, who are reported to be moderate Muslims, won last April's election which means they will dominate Aceh's new parliament (DPRD).
Most likely they'll make changes to existing by-laws, especially the radical ones.
