Today I received an e-mail from Citibank Indonesia explaining about the sanctions that the Indonesian banking regulator i.e. Bank Indonesia, has imposed on said bank for violations of internal bank regulations and risk management as well as weaknesses in its internal control and operating procedures.
In connection with the two ongoing scandals, one surrounding suspicions of embezzlement by its former Senior Manager and the other involving the death of a credit card customer, Citibank promised that it will it do its best to follow all the laws and regulations in Indonesia, like it has done for so many years.
Earlier I read on The Jakarta Globe that the sanctions were a two-year freeze on new credit card customers for Citibank Indonesia, a ban on acquiring new priority banking customers for one year and a one-year moratorium on opening new branch offices.
I hope that the above sanctions would not stop the Investigations that are now being carried out by the Police on the possibility of Money Laundering and the Murder cases by officials of Citibank Indonesia.

The Murder of TV Reporters
Two TV reporters have been murdered in the eastern part of Indonesia, in three weeks..
On 30 July, Ardiansyah Matra'i, a reporter of Merauke TV in Merauke, Papua Province, was found dead. His death was allegedly linked to his coverage of Illegal Logging practices in the province.
Last Saturday, Ridwan Salamun, a reporter of SunTV Network, was found dead while covering a clash between two rival group of people in Tual, Maluku Province.
I hope that the above murder cases would be investigated thoroughly.

Underaged Murderer
A 10-years-old boy was suspected by the Jakarta Police of murdering his adoptive mother last October. According to the The Jakarta Globe, the National Commission for Child Protection is now trying to save the boy.
Mercy Urged for Child Charged in Jakarta Murder
The National Commission for Child Protection on Wednesday said it was working hard to save a 10-year-old boy, suspected of having stabbed and beaten his adoptive mother to death, from serving up to 15 years in jail.
East Jakarta Police investigators have said the child, who is originally from Nias and is an orphaned survivor of the 2004 tsunami in Aceh, may face charges for violating the 2004 law on domestic violence.
The boy’s adoptive mother, Etty Rochyati, 55, was found dead in a ditch near her house in Ciracas, East Jakarta, in October. She had been found with multiple blows on the head possibly due to being beaten with a blunt instrument and a stab wound to the stomach.
According to police, the boy said Etty had threatened to kick him out of the house if he did not obey her, and told him, “Don’t you know that you have no more mother and father?”
Arist Merdeka Sirait, secretary general of the commission, also known as Komnas Anak, said the charge and the law on which it was based was inappropriate.
If tried, he said, the boy should only be charged with the Criminal Code article on violence leading to death. The charge carries a sentence of up to 10 years but under the Child Protection Law, minors may only serve a third of the sentence, he said.
Arist also argued that police investigators had failed to take into consideration the regular maltreatment of the child by his adoptive mother.
“What the boy did may be seen as self-defense against abuse and was not intentional,” he said.
“If the boy is still threatened with a 15-year prison sentence, the rule of law in Indonesia has been violated and this runs against what the Justice and Human Rights Ministry has planned for in its first 100-day work program,” Arist said.
He added that a memorandum of understanding had been signed by five ministries and the National Police for underage criminal offenders stipulating they no longer be sent to jail but remanded to social institutions instead.
Arist said the commission would push for an out-of-court settlement.
“We are not dealing with the case of a 22-year-old man but a 10-year-old who is unstable and still has a long life ahead of him,” he said.
He also said that Komnas Anak recommended that if the child, whose identity has been withheld, did not face trial, then he should be returned to the care of the state or to social services to get the appropriate psychological counseling.
“Underaged criminal offenders should be given restorative justice — meaning giving them back to their parents or to social institutions,” he said.
The family of the victim, who Arist said has agreed to drop charges against the boy, will meet with judges of the East Jakarta Court, police investigators, the commission and the Legal Aid Foundation to discuss the best way to move forward with the case.

The Murder of a Reporter in Bali
People all over the world are expecting that members of Parliament consists of respectful, good, honest and patriotic persons who have high moral standard and self integrity. That way, they can properly serve the people who elected them as representative in handling state affairs.
In reality, we saw/heard/read news about unlawful conducts of Members of Parliament (MP), many of which have been prosecuted & jailed. The latest one being a candidate MP in Bali i.e Nyoman Susrama, who according to Temporinteraktif, has been arrested by the Police and named as suspect in the murder of a Journalist of a local news paper Radar Bali i.e. Agung Gede Narendra Prabangsa.
The arrest was made 3 months after the Police found the dead body of Agung near the Padangbai sea port on 16 February 2009. Earlier, the Police said they are investigating the possible motives of the murder, the most likely being Agung’s article in Radar Bali about misappropriation of funds in the development of an international kindergarten project headed by Nyoman.
Considering that Nyoman is a candidate in the local Parliamentary election last April, in which his political party won a seat, I hope that the Police would thoroughly investigate whether or not he is really involved in the murder.

The Arrest of Antasari
After questioning the non active Chief of the Commission for the Eradication of Corruption (KPK) Antasari Azhar for 8 hours yesterday, the Jakarta Police has announced that the former is a Suspect who Masterminded the murder of the Director of PT. Putera Rajawali Banjaran Nasrudin Zulkarnaen.
According to Kompas, this announcement was made by the Chief of the Jakarta Police Wahyono based on the result of prior interrogation of 10 other Suspects in this case i.e Daniel the Executor, Hendrikus Walen who gave instruction, Heri Santoso the motorcyclist, A & C as field observers of the execution, AM observer of the victim’s behavior, Wiliardi Wizard (Police Colonel), and Jerry Kusuma as liaison officer, and Sigit Haryo Wibisono who financed the execution. The Police have accused Antasari of committing Pre-Meditated Murder based on the Penal Code Art. 340, with a maximum punishment of death penalty, and therefore placed him under arrest.
According to Detik, in order to safeguard Antasari’s well being, the Police have not placed him in a general detention center where corrupters caught by KPK are placed but in a Narcotic Detention Center. In this regards, Antasari’s lawyer Ari Y. Amir was quoted as saying that on Tuesday he will request for postponement of detention. He further said that Antasari has given some hints that there is a grand scenario behind this case which he plan to reveal later on.
Let's just wait and see the further development of this case.

3 latest murder cases
Between 11 and 17 March 2009, three brutal murder cases in Jakarta have been widely reported by our news media.
The first one was the murder of TV movies (sinetron) actress Hanny Wahab(53), that took place at her home in Jakarta, on Wednesday, 11 March 2009. According to Detik News, the suspected murderers, i.e. the deceased's former servants, have been arrested by the Police. Investigation revealed that the suspects committed the murder because they want to get even with her for treating them unkindly when they worked for her.
The second one was the murder of Nasrudin Zulkarnain (41), Director of PT. Putra Rajawali Banjaran, who was shot dead in his car by two unidentified men riding a motor cycle, on the way home from playing golf in Tangerang, Banten. According to Kompas, until this moment the Police have still not found the murderer.
The third one was the murder of Elen a.k.a Maria Fransisca Bernadette (22), who was found dead at the emergency staircase of the 6th floor of the Pacific Place, a high class shopping center in Jakarta, on Tuesday 17 March 2009. According to Oke Zone, the Police have examined 5 employees of the building management as witnesses. But the case is still a mystery.
The above murder cases, as any others murders, are very frightening for me as citizen of Jakarta. I hope that the Police will soon solve the cases very soon so as to calm us down.
