I always think that the circulation of Illegal Drugs in Indonesia has reached a very dangerous level, that our country has been dubbed by some news media as a haven for illegal drugs.
Those who have members of families and/or friends who are Drug Addicts/Junkies would know for sure that they would would do anything to satisfy their needs for illegal drugs, including lie, steal or even kill.
For that reason I always hope that the Courts of Justice in Indonesia would pass heavy punishments to anyone involved in the trade of illegal drugs as stipulated by the Anti Narcotics Law No 22/1997 Article 80 i.e maximum Death Sentence, and the Anti Psychoactive Drugs Law No. 5/1997 Article 60 i.e maximum sentence of up to 15 years in prison. Please read here for details.
Unfortunately, the facts show that the above laws have not been implemented properly. Those who were involved in Illegal Drug trades have been punished lighter than they supposed to be.
For example, last Friday President Susilo Yudoyono (SBY) granted Clemency to an Indonesian drug trafficker that has been sentenced to death by the District Court of Tangerang, Banten, the High Court and the Supreme Court. And last May, President SBY trimmed five years off Australian drug convict Schapelle Corby's 2 years prison sentence. Please read here for details.
Earlier this year, the Supreme Court revoked the punishment of an Illegal Drug Lord i.e. Hengky Gunawan, from Death Sentence into a 15 years Prison Sentence. Please read here for details.
The saddest thing is that the above lightening of punishments were done based on the reason to upheld human rights of those Drug Traders/Dealers. I wonder whether the human rights of the Drug Addicts/Junkies and their families and friends have been forgotten.

Darsem spared from Death Execution
A Court in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, has spared an Indonesian worker i.e Darsem, from death execution after the Indonesian government paid a compensation of Rp 4.6 Billion (US$ 534,000.00).
According to The Jakarta Globe, Darsem from Subang-West Java, was convicted on May 2009 and sentenced to death despite her plea that she had killed her boss in self-defense because he had attempted to rape her.
Last January, the victim’s family forgave Darsem and agreed to spare her, but only if she could afford to pay the above mentioned compensation.
I am very happy with this news because I thought that a court's death sentence can only be cancelled by a superior court or by pardon given by the head of state, not by the victim's family pardon and compensation to them.
I wonder whether the bloodshed that has been going on for many years in the Arab world could be settled this way (by pardon and paying compensation).

Saudi Arabia Beheads an Indonesian Worker
The authoritarian regime of Saudi Arabia has carried out a death execution on an Indonesian female worker namely Ruyati on Saturday in the country's western Province of Mecca.
The execution was carried out by using a barbaric middle-age-method i.e cutting-off the head of Ruyati with a sword.
The SPA news agency quoted an official of the Saudi Interior Ministry as saying that Ruyati was found guilty of murdering Khairiya binti Hamid Mijid by hitting her in the head with a meat chopper and stabbing her in the neck.
A spokesman of the Indonesian Foreign Ministry i.e. Michael Tene criticized that the execution was done without observing international practices related to consular protection. He said that the Ministry was aware of the case and Ruyati has confessed to the murder, but was not informed of the timing of the execution.
Meanwhile, according to his spokesman, President SBY expressed his condolence over the death of Ruyati.
I would like to expressed my deepest sympathy and condolence on the death of Ruyati. I hope that her family would be given the strength to live without her.
I also hope that our government would show much stronger reaction toward the Saudi government and try its very best to stop more beheading of our workers in the future.

Lessons from Adjie
" C'est la Vie! " that's a French expression which means " That's Life! " in English.
That's what my mom used to say to me when I was a little boy whenever I asked her detailed questions about the complexity of people's characters and their lives.
Ironically, that's what I said to my mom last Saturday when she asked me detailed questions about the very shocking sudden demise of actor/model turned member of the House of Representatives Adjie Massaid (43) who passed away in the very early morning of Saturday because of a very sudden heart attack.
My mom (80) and dad (81) have reasons to ask for details, because they used to be quite close to Adjie as kid brother of Cherie, Dutch citizen ex wife of my late kid brother Dody. Although Dody passed away many years ago and Cherie have been living in Holland with their daughter Kemilau however my parents' longing for their niece seems make them remember about people related to her.
Adjie's death has changed my perception about heart attack which I used to think would only cause death to people above 50 who are lazy, love eating, fat, burdened with whole lots of problems in their lives.
Compared to me, Adjie lead a much healthier life than me in the sense he maintained physical health since he was young, he has successful careers, a loving father of three kids, two from ex wife Reza (popular singer) and one from current wife Angelina Sondakh a member of the House.
From now on I must change my habits and start physical exercises more frequently, minimize eating meats that I loved so much, be more relax and flexible, and most of all I should sleep more than I usually do.
Last but not least, I would like to express my deepest condolences and sympathy to everyone close to Adjie, may his soul rest in peace.

Death Sentence to Stop Corruption
People in Indonesia are sick and tired of corruption that they want those involved to be sentenced to death so that others would not follow.
And today, the news media have reported that three state officials have agreed with this idea.
The first is Chief of the Constitutional Court Mahfud MD who told VivaNews that the Corruption Eradication Law provide possibility to punnish those who corrupt with a death sentence.
The second is the Chief of the Judicial Comission Busyiro Muqoddas who told VivaNews that death sentence can be passed on those who corrupted several times; who is rich because of corruption; and who has corrupted more than 100 billion Rupiah.
The third is the Minister of Law and Human Rights Patrialis Akbar who told BBC that we should follow China's in erradicating corruption that is by punnishing those involved in corruption with death sentence.
I wish that the above idea is also supported by religious organizations that have always been protesting about things which they deemed hazardous for society like Pornography, Smoking Cigarettes, et cetera, et cetera.
